Swimming Reindeer sculpture
The Swimming Reindeer was discovered in 1866 by Peccadeau de l’Isle while overseeing the construction of a railway line at Montastruc in southwestern France. It was carved from the tip of a mammoth tusk around 13,000 years ago and was discovered in two pieces. The inspiration for The Twins began with a tiny marble statue, dating from 5,800 BC. It shows two figures who share a single lower body and was discovered at Catal Huyuk in Anatolia. It’s one of several two-headed or double bodied sculptures from the same part of the world.
