Description
Lion-headed beings have been part of humanity’s myths and religions from the very earliest days. The oldest known depiction is over 32,000 years old and is probably the oldest surviving piece of sculpture. Echoes of that image have stayed with us and can be found in Babylon, in Egypt, in the religion of Mithras so popular in ancient Rome, and even in the lion-headed angel Ariel.

The Venus of Willendorf was unearthed in Austria in 1908. She was carved by an unknown artist some time between 24,000 and 22,000 years ago. Her original purpose and meaning may never be known, but millennia later her power to move us has not diminished. The Twins sculpture
The inspiration for The Twins began with a tiny marble statue, dating from 5,800 BC. It shows two figures who share a single lower body and was discovered at Catal Huyuk in Anatolia. It’s one of several two-headed or double bodied sculptures from the same part of the world. Swimming Reindeer sculpture
The Swimming Reindeer was discovered in 1866 by Peccadeau de l’Isle while overseeing the construction of a railway line at Montastruc in southwestern France. It was carved from the tip of a mammoth tusk around 13,000 years ago and was discovered in two pieces.
