Ancient Egyptian Priestesses practiced magic through Heka, the fundamental divine power used to maintain universal order, heal the sick, and protect the vulnerable.
Priestesses was also the keeper of the Book of the Dead a very powerful Magical book full of spells and castings.
Priestess actually worked her magic. She wasn't casting random hexes; she was acting as a divine conduit.  A priestess would step out of her human identity and "become" a deity. For example, to heal a scorpion bite, she would declare, "I am Isis, and my words heal." By embodying the goddess, her words carried cosmic weight.
